Here are the tomatoes, red, yellow, orange, all brilliant, all indicative of some indelible goodness coming up from the Earth. Here are the carrots, orange lightning bolts I pulled back out of the Earth. Sunny days and rain. Here are all the good things from the farm – where the Earth comes up and into the roots of plants and makes food. Here is food to strengthen you, to bring you joy, to keep you fed and active, and to sharpen your mind.

Food is simple enough – our bodies need food to live. Without food we die. Just like the air we breathe and the water we drink, food sustains us. Sun, water, and soil make food, food becomes energy in our bodies or garbage in the compost heap. From the heap the flowers bloom. All of it is in us, the sun, the water, the air, the soil; and all of us is in these things too. All things are one.

So too are we sustained by each other. Our gardens reach to the ends of the Earth so long as we grow in harmony and equality - this is a way of saying that together we flourish, divided we rot. We must work hard to abide by others and their freedom to exist on this planet and never infringe upon that essential right. The suffering of one is the suffering of all.

You do not come to us for politics or philosophy, you come for vegetables, and vegetables you shall receive. Let them be a respite to you and your family and provide some comfort on this swiftly tilting planet. But I will say this, that we must let old evils stay dead in the ground, enemies vanquished like weeds pulled from the healthy garden of our democracy.

And if those weeds grow back then it is up to us to pull them out, roots and all, and once more relegate them and their insidious hatred to the annals of history, like a tall heap of compost sprouting flowers in the sun.
